This chapter of “Elements of Moral Philosophy” by James Rachels finally addresses one of the most overriding concerns in any discussion about morality and ethics in general—religion. Nietzsche’s The Genealogy of Morals is an exercise in ‘animal psychology’, studying (in Nietzsche’s own words) “the physiology and evolutionary history of organisms and concepts.” In a number of other central works Nietzsche embraces science as providing access to what he sees as ‘the real world of nature’ – whereas our religious, moral and aesthetic sentiments belong only to the surface of things.

In other words, moral philosophy should be inseparable from moral education. 4) Ask the related question: How do people become ethical or unethical? They defied their cultural conditioning by using ethical understanding; even if they would not phrase it this way. So philosophy is identified with metaphysics. ‘Meta’ means beyond and the concern it’s beyond the physical World is Metaphysics. Contemporary themes and problems in science studies. However, this seems wholly wrong: any reasonable Christian would agree that Buddha was a good person even though he didn’t believe in the Christian’s God; any non-believer who tortured children for fun could not claim their actions were morally neutral since they were faithless.

Furthermore, if the greatest philosophers throughout history have been debating ethics and morality, how can the common man truly understand it? Thinking for yourself, considering each principle on its own and not part of an antiquated belief system, can help you stay spiritual and religious without feeling like your moral code is already prescribed.

C.) declares that the summum bonum consists in the perfect imitation of God, the Absolute Good, an imitation which cannot be fully realised in this life. Basically, the idea here is that there is no single set of ethical principles which apply universally. This ultimately leads to a system of virtues and values. In this sense, ethics seeks to define human behavior as it relates to fairness.

Asking Good Questions moves beyond a traditional discussion of ethical theory, focusing on how educators can use these important frameworks to facilitate critical thinking about real-life ethical dilemmas. An individual’s decisions belong exclusively to that being — no matter the external circumstances.

Becoming a philosopher, pianist or novelist might be my end in this sense. There is a bibliography at the end of each section, although the legal citations have been edited out of the opinions. The strict segregation of the good from personal concerns and the contingencies of experience makes possible a kind of tyrannical formalism that becomes blind to the actual conditions of existence, and thereby not only inapplicable but dangerously inflexible (the good at any cost).

Applied ethics takes the basics from metaethics and normative ethics, twists them around, and derives lists of actions that should or should not be done in particular fields. Indeed, it is hard to imagine any life that is recognizably human without the use of others in pursuit of our goals. Relativists declare that "there are no absolute truths." First of all, acting ethically has two parts: (1) figuring out what is the right thing to do in your particular situation and (2) doing it.
